Wāhine or kōhine role model

Nan (Barbara) - She puts 110% effort into everything she does; just by continuing to get up every day and dedicating all of her hard work towards not only her grandchildren but the community. The amount of sacrifice she makes to keep the slightest smile on our faces is the exact reason why I choose to show up and put in 110%.

Porsha Woodman: She is an athlete - she is a different breed, and as soon as her hands touches the ball, she is everything but powerless.

She's my role model because she shows what it's like to put your heart out on the field and represent not only yourself while playing, but also your family and your country. She never tends to give up.

For her, giving up is not an option. She is my motivation to want to be a better athlete. She is dedicated, disciplined, and driven. That's what inspires me to see her as a great role model.

SUPER WOMAN power

My strengths would definitely have to be that I am a very organised individual, I have excellent time management skills, and I like to meet like-minded people in sports, music, and all of the above. One thing I notice about myself is that I am always focused, and I'm determined to get things done.

Another strength is planning. I am always driven, and this is what pushes me to that extra 10% in everything I do. No matter the struggle or difficulty, I am always willing to learn and experience new things. I love stepping out of my comfort zone, and this is what helps me be the outgoing individual I am.

Lastly, I always strive to do better. I rely on the outcomes of things and aim to improve on what I did yesterday or the day before. I want to build upon those outcomes and build an even better future. This does not only relate to sports and academics but to life as well.

Advice to inspire wāhine in Sport and Active Recreation

If you are unsure about wanting to give things a go, then that is a clear reason why you should give it a go. Not taking that risk and still hoping for a better outcome will not produce any result other than possible regret.

As an athlete, the more you participate, the more opportunities are open to you. You have to step out to step up. You will never fulfil your own personal potential if you don't take a risk. Positive self-talk is a great tool for keeping yourself motivated and keen. You are not always going to have your role models around, so you've got to have that kind of mindset to just go for it, which puts you in a good frame of mind and makes you want to do better for not only yourself but your future.
